Force India VJM05

Force India VJM05

The VJM05 was revealed right next to Force India’s base at the iconic Silverstone track. Force India are now in their fifth year and after such a strong end to last year they will be hoping this new car will allow their drivers Paul Di Resta and Nico Hulkenburg to compete at an even higher level this year.

So if we dive straight into the new car the first thing we see is Force India have the 2012 stepped nose design on their car just like Ferrari and Caterham, but with the way they have mounted the front cameras onto the car this nose looks more like a hammer head shark rather than a crocodile. Below this new nose we see a completely new front wing. It follows the design most teams are taking on now which was initially pioneered by the current leaders in F1, Red Bull.

The next thing I noticed is like Caterham Force India has got rid of the blade roll hoop design they had last year. The blade design created less drag then the standard one but with the new rules the teams are trying to get as much rear downforce as possible and the more conventional roll hoop design allows more air to get to the rear wing. The side-pods are very similar to the ones found on the Toro Rosso last year. There is a huge undercut underneath them to allow a lot more air to get to the diffuser.

Onto the diffuser itself, it is the only one to be shown at the cars launch as the other teams had them covered up. There is a slotted gurney flap on top of the diffuser which was seen on nearly every car last year as the double diffusers where banned. The exhausts are on the center line of the car and point directly up towards the rear wing but this is likely to change like most of the teams designs will. From what I can see there is not a lot of cooling outlets, Force India seem to be using Red Bull’s tail funnel design to get rid off all of the hot air inside the car. Whether this will be enough cooling is a mystery to me, they may add some cooling vents for testing and the actual car they will race with.

Overall this car is a very neat and tidy car that has a very logical interpretation of the regulations. So far this looks like it could be the car to push Force India even higher up the grid.
